Baccarat: The History Behind the Game

Baccarat is one of those games with a history that you would enjoy telling. Baccarat is one of the oldest games there is, and it has a mysterious history that is as equally alluring as the game itself.

Baccarat has always been associated with exclusivity and high rollers. It seems that there is only a select few who can afford to win and lose thousands of dollars in one night in a game of baccarat, and that is probably why the game has never gained the popularity that other games are enjoying.

Baccarat's exact origin is hard to pinpoint. Two countries are at odds at who started the game. Italy claims that the game's first player was an Italian named Felix Faulguierein, and that it was originally a game played with tarot cards. The game spread to France, where the French called it Chemin de fer, and added a few modifications to the game. The French, on the other hand, also claim that the game originally started with them.

Other accounts of the game's origin tell of it as coming from an age-old Etruscan ritual where a young blond girl's fate was determined by a die toss. A young blond virgin, surrounded by a group of priests, would toss a die and the results would reveal her fate. If the die toss resulted to a 9 or an 8, that meant that she would become a priestess in the temple. If the die toss resulted to a 7 or a 6 she was to be banned from any temple activities as long as she lived. If the die toss resulted to any number below 6 she was fated to walk into the sea and drown herself.

Whatever the real deal is, the game became so popular in Italy and France. In France the game became a favorite of the nobles. Chemin de fer spread to England, where it also became hugely popular as European baccarat. From there it spread to Argentina where it gained its place as one of the most exclusive casino games in the countries most sophisticated casino, the Mar del Plata. From there it went to Cuba, where it became known as American baccarat.

Unfortunately, baccarat never gained the same popularity in the US that is has gained in other countries in Europe and Latin America. It seems that Americans were wary of the high stakes involved in the game. However, it was thanks to Tommy Renzoni, a Las Vegas casino executive. He brought the game to Las Vegas casinos for the high rollers were looking for and willing to bet large sums of money for a night of thrill and excitement.
